TILE Community Building and "the Community Kitchen"

The project partners represent a broad network of learning communities. However, these communities are frequently reluctant users of network technologies. To draw in these reluctant users of e-learning, TILE draws on familiar Canadian community traditions. Throughout the duration of the project TILE hosts regular "Learning object potlucks and community kitchens" in different locations across Canada. Participants are invited from the various learning communities. Each participant must bring learning resources that contribute to the chosen learning theme. Over a two day period the participants use the contributed resources and newly created resources to collaboratively craft learning objects for the repository. This collaboration occurs in a community kitchen atmosphere supported by contributed food and music. These events introduce author/educators to the LOR service, create a community of collaborators, train participants in the use of the authoring tools and provide the opportunity to collect valuable user feedback regarding the design of the tools.

As part of these events, synchronous and asynchronous forums were used to discuss teaching and learning approaches and best practices.
